The Nike Air Force 1 was first introduced in 1982. The Nike Air Force 1 was the first basketball shoe to feature Nike Air technology. The funny thing was that the Nike Air Force 1 was originally designed for NBA players like Moses Malone and Jeff Ruland, but was also worn by other basketball legends.
After the first wave of Air Force 1 production ended in 1984, Nike's perception of its customers suddenly changed. The demand for the basketball sneaker increased. Three Baltimore retailers - “Downtown Locker Room”, “Charley Rudo's Sports” and “Cinderella Shoes” - convinced Nike to release the Nike Air Force 1 in a completely new series in different color designs. Even though the demand for the Air Force 1 was mainly on the eastern side of the United States, the popularity of the sneaker grew evenly. Especially when the hip-hop community discovered the Air Force 1, the popularity increased. A tip of the iceberg is when one of the most famous hip-hop artists of the early 2000's 'Nelly' released a song called “Air Force Ones”.
In 2013 there was suddenly a huge hype about the Nike sneakers in Germany. It was then about the Nike models; Air Force 1, Air Max and Frees that generated the biggest hype and sales. New designs were developed during this period, with the classic white variant proving to be the most popular.
The Nike Air Force 1 was designed by Bruce Kilgore. Kilgore joined Nike in 1979 as a former designer and sculptor, the same year Nike introduced Air technology. In addition to the Air Force 1, Kilgore also developed the Air Jordan II, Air 180 and Sock Racer. Initially, the Air Force 1 was only available as a high and low version. Later the medium-high variant was introduced.
